Computer labs

There are four computer laboratories in the School which are referred to by their room number:

  • A111 – located on the first floor of the eastern wing. This laboratory, used for classes and general purpose, is equipped with 24 PCs running Windows 7-32bit and a printer. A111 is accessible with the UWA Student swipe card, providing you are an enrolled student. There is a pay-as-you-go printer station with an A4 printer.
  • G23 – located on the ground floor, adjacent to the CNC milling room where your Computer Aided Designs come to life. This laboratory is used for classes and general purpose and is equipped with an A3 printer and 26 PCs running Windows 7-32bit. G23 is open during the day. There is a pay-as-you-go printer station with this A3 printer.
  • E263 – located on the second floor of the western wing. This lab is general purpose for final year students only, equipped with 12 PCs running Window 7-32bit. Final year students may be issued with a key for after hours access. There is a pay-as-you-go printer station in the main corridor.
  • A207 – located on the second floor of the eastern wing. This laboratory, used for classes and general purpose, is equipped with 109 PCs running Windows 7-32bit. There is a pay-as-you-go printer station in the main corridor. A207 is accessible with the UWA Student swipe card, providing you are an enrolled student.

We also have several SUN and linux workstations available to staff and students undertaking special projects. The Maths Computing Lab (MCL) is also available to enrolled students.

Access and accounts

Students enrolled in Faculty of  Engineering units are eligible for a computer laboratory account.

Computer accounts are created automatically, tied to a students enrollment and their Pheme account. To activate your account be sure to log into Pheme at least once before using the lab computers. When logging into the Mechanical Engineering lab computers, be sure to:
  • select the ECM domain
  • use your Student Number as the username
  • use your pheme password

Your ECM password is updated whenever you log into pheme. If you have not logged into pheme since your ECM account was created, your account will be unavailable unti you do so.

Printing

Printing in the computer laboratories is subject to quotas, charged at 10c/A4sheet.

To purchase more print quota you must first add credit to your student/transaction card using one of the card stations in the libraries. Print Quota is sold in $5 blocks.

There is also a pay-as-you-go printing facility in rooms G23, 111 and 207. By default, when you submit a print job in rooms G23, 111 and 207, you will need to insert your student/transaction card into the print station and select the job, then select the appropriate printer from the print dialogue.

This information is subject to change.

File storage (DRAFT 2011)

Each account has a network home directory, mapped as H drive (H:), accessible from every lab computer. You should ensure that you save your work in progress to H drive, so that it is available from other computers.

Data saved to the local machines, including the desktop, is periodically deleted.

Each laboratory computer also has an area (D:) where you may store files locally. Although this area is not automatically deleted, you should be aware that files in D: can be deleted without any warning.

There is an area on the network (known as Scratch) for sharing files with staff and other students. This area should appear as T drive (T:) from every lab computer. Access to this drive is unrestricted and is not part of the School’s back schedule so you should consider this storage area temporary and be aware that files in T: can be deleted without any warning.

Backups are your responsibility.
