Life at UWA

View from Winthrop HallEstablished in 1911, UWA was Western Australia's first university and remains one of the best in the world. The University of Western Australia is an ideal environment for study. It has libraries totalling over 3 million volumes including all the principle scholarly serials. Generous reading and private study areas are provided in the libraries and also in Departments.

The School of Mechanical Engineering has well-equipped computer labs, with one computer for every three students. There is a workshop for students to work on projects, with supervised use of lathes and milling machines. There are extensive laboratories furnished with advanced mechanical engineering, analytical and test equipment to serve both teaching and research activities.

StudentsPerth is a clean, peaceful and pleasant city of about one million people. It is situated in the heart of an extensive group of suburbs, between the hills of the Darling Scarp and the Indian Ocean, on the west coast of Australia. The climate is idyllic for most of the year, with perfect weather nearly all year round. It is an ideal place for outdoor sports and activities such as bushwalking and windsurfing.

The picturesque UWA campus is set on the banks of the Swan river, about 10 minutes' drive from Perth and a short walk from Kings Park. Most of the campus is landscaped, with many sandstone buildings surrounded by native and exotic plants.

Australia is a multicultural country, and the people of Australia have roots in every part of the world. Racial harassment is neither socially nor legally acceptable in Australia and is rarely seen. On campus students mingle with little regard to religion, nationality or race. However, students are able to maintain cultural lifestyles with specialty food stores, places of worship and social networks all present in Perth.
