We have established a research effort to develop better ways for clearing landmines from the many countries affected by them. We have established a research team in Islamabad, Pakistan, to study the effectiveness of different clearance methods in a developing country context. We are not developing robots yet: we don't have either tools or sensors to make them effective. Instead we are working on hand tools and other ways to extend the abilities of manual deminers. Our work has international recognition: with our associates, we are one of the few groups in the world directly working on the problems of manual mine clearance. Other research programs which spend millions of dollars on new detection technology and large machines have so far had very limited success in producing usable research results. Our demining research has been supported by private donations, a US Defense Department contract and commercial contracts.
