Mostar

Mostar: the town centre has been wrecked by intense fighting between all factions. Some parts are being restored. The old bridge (which gives Mostar its name) is being slowly restored. As many of the original stones as possible have been raised from the river bed, and are being sorted for reuse. The project appears to be stalled for lack of funding.

Restored street in the western part of the town centre..... ....just around the next corner....

Photo mo-17: Demining site alongside the main road just north of Mostar near Potoci.

Photo mo-18: Interior of building: demining work proceeding in courtyard.

Photo mo-19: Prickly hedgerow vegetation waiting to be dealt with across the road.

Photo mo-20: Farm houses waiting for reconstruction (and probably demining as well).

Photo mo-21: Close up of typical ground around Mostar: the soil is stony with limestone chips and larger rocks buried just below the surface.

Photo mo-22: Nearby terrain which is mined (no markings). Clumps of vegetation grow in former fields. Mined areas extend to the hills beyond.
