Tribology Course (26 lectures, 13 tutorials and 4 laboratories) is conducted as a final year unit. The course is intended to introduce a student to the field of lubrication and wear. During the course the students are taught of fundamentals of lubrication and wear. In Australia most of the industrial failures are tribology related and the course is designed from the viewpoint of a mechanical engineer.
The Laboratory invites graduates from engineering, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, computer science and medicine to undertake research as candidates for a higher degree. Scholarships are available for suitably qualified students. Both Australian and overseas students are welcome to apply.
Opportunities in research for graduates offered by the Tribology Group are described below. The projects are structured according to the first degree subject of candidates.
The knowledge of tribology is essential to the operations of most large industrial and technical establishments. Mining and petrochemical companies provide much of the local demand in this state. Interstate and overseas, manufacturing companies also require expertise in this area. The candidates with a first class degree in any of the above listed areas and a degree in tribology could be chosen for a technical leadership in any of these industries. For example the following positions would require a combination of a specialised knowledge in tribology and the background from the fist degree: mechanical consultants, maintenance and projects engineers are required by engineering companies, lubricant chemists are required by oil companies, materials processing and surface technology companies would be interested in tribology graduates with a first degree in materials science, etc.
